Ronit (Rachel Weisz) lives a bohemian life as a photographer in New York. But she is called back to her childhood home in the Orthodox Jewish community of London when her father, a greatly respected rabbi, dies. While taking part in the religious observances required to mourn and celebrate her father, Ronit encounters two old friends: Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), her father’s favourite pupil who is now an esteemed young rabbi himself, and Esti (Rachel McAdams), who was Ronit’s best friend and partner in teenage rebellion, and is now married to Dovid.
Perturbed to find Esti much more conservative than she remembers, Ronit doubly mourns both her father and her past, but Esti has desires of her own she has long kept hidden. As the two women reconnect and long-buried intimacy begins to resurface between them, a passion reignites that may have been the catalyst for Ronit leaving all those years ago.
