all your cinema nova questions answered

Welcome to Cinema Nova
Melbourne's largest and most vibrant arthouse cinema complex

We offer the very best in new release arthouse films together with upmarket commercial releases, regular special film events and festivals, all in a warm, intimate environment of architecturally challenging design.

Cinema Nova had its beginnings as a twin arthouse cinema when it opened in August 1992 and has been expanding in size and diversity ever since. Two years after opening, the Nova doubled in size to a four screen complex; adding a fifth screen a year later. December 1999 saw Cinemas 6, 7 and 8 open to a public with an insatiable appetite for fine film. In 2004 three more screens opened including Melbourne’s first purely digital cinema screen. In 2010, just in time for Cinema Nova’s 18th birthday, a further 4 screens were added bringing the total to 15 auditoria.

The Accessible Cinema Program

What are open captioned movies?
Open captioned movies ensure that all people can enjoy films, including the Deaf and hearing impaired. Captions are the reproduction of the soundtrack in a text format, and are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Captions reproduce the dialogue as well as significant sound effects and song lyrics. Please note that editorial decisions are sometimes made not to include song lyrics as they may detract from the important action or visual impact that is taking place on the screen.

Open captioned movies are advertised with the symbol (OC).
Who uses captions?
Anyone - captions are there to be enjoyed by all members of the public.

People who are deaf or hearing impaireds - people who have a hearing impairment rely on captions to follow the soundtrack on movies, television or videos. There are around 3.5 million Australians with a recognised hearing loss.

People learning English - many language schools use captioned videos and television to help teach people spoken English. It is easier to follow a soundtrack reading the captions and listening to the pronunciation of words.

What are audio described movies?
Audio described movies ensure that all people can enjoy films, including the blind and vision impaired.

Audio description provides an additional commentary via personal headphones to concisely narrate the visual elements of a movie. Visual elements of a movie may include descriptions of new scenes, settings, costumers, body language, and ‘sight gags’. Audio description is spoken between existing portions of dialogue.

Audio described movies are advertised with the symbol (AD).
Who uses audio description?
Anyone – audio description is there to be enjoyed by all members of the public.

People who are blind or have a vision impairment - people with vision impairments are the primary users of audio description. There are more than 500,000 Australians with a vision impairment.

People with print disabilities – people with disabilities such as dyslexia, colour blindness, and others with both learning difficulties and physical disabilities to interact with print and visual media can also benefit from audio description.
