Handmaiden, The

Now Showing

NOVA EXCLUSIVE! The new film from Korean auteur Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker), THE HANDMAIDEN has been adapted from Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith, transposed from its Victorian setting into 1930s Korea during the Japanese occupation.

Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) is a young pickpocket in the employ of a master conman known as The Count (Ha Jung-woo), and has been sent to take up the position of handmaiden to a shy Japanese heiress, Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee), who lives in a secluded rural estate with her domineering uncle. The plan is for Sook-hee to lure Hideko into falling in love with The Count, then once she marries him embezzle her fortune. But Hideko is not the soft, easy mark these predators expected, and when Sook-hee and Hideko develop feelings for each other all bets are off. A dangerous and sexually devious tale filled with Park’s razor-sharp humour, THE HANDMAIDEN is a delicious pleasure that will leave you gasping.
