Mel Gibson is back in the director’s seat for HACKSAW RIDGE, the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, during the Battle of Okinawa saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun.
Portrayed by Andrew Garfield, Doss was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon. He was a pacifist who, although believing in the just nature of the war, was of the conviction that all killing was wrong. As an army medic Doss single-handedly rescued the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers, and was the target of attacks by grenades and snipers.
Receiving a standing ovation at its premiere screening at the Venice Film Festival, and filled with quality Australian acting talent such as Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, Teresa Palmer and Sam Worthington, HACKSAW RIDGE is a moving, gut-wrenching war drama that is sure to feature highly throughout the awards season.
