NOVA EXCLUSIVE! Annie (Nicole Kidman) and Baxter Fang (Jason Bateman) didn’t have an ordinary upbringing. The offspring of a pair of eccentric and controversial performance artists (Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett), Annie and Baxter were forced to be involved in their parents’ elaborately staged, often dangerous public art pieces as they were growing up - and to add insult to injury were referred to constantly as Child A and Child B. Consequently, the Fang children are deeply suspicious and jaded about anything concerning their parents.
When the elder Fangs all of a sudden mysteriously disappear, their children are initially unconcerned. Annie is convinced it’s simply another of their attention-seeking art stunts, and it’s only after the lack of communication stretches on that Baxter is willing to entertain the possibility that there may by something more sinister afoot. An unpredictable and idiosyncratic take on the dysfunctional family drama, Jason Bateman’s sophomore directorial effort is both astringently funny and poignant in its examination of the effects of unorthodox parenting.
