Anne Hathaway proves that there’s a giant, city-crushing monster in all of us in Nacho Vigalondo’s genre-bending kaiju comedy.
Gloria (Hathaway) is a human disaster; unemployed, frequently drunk, and has just been dumped by her successful boyfriend. With her tail between her legs she returns to her childhood home in a small town, and gets offered a job by an old school friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), at his bar. After a night of drunken shenanigans with Oscar and his barfly buddies, Gloria wakes up to discover an extraordinary world news story has developed: a giant, lizard-like monster appeared in Seoul overnight. And as Gloria blearily recollects what occurred the night before, she comes to a startling conclusion: she and the monster are one and the same.
Vigalonda’s film never goes exactly where you think it’s going to in its fun zig-zag exploration of how outward monsters may be heroes in disguise, and the real monsters are never who you first suspect.
