MEET THE FILMMAKER: Advance screening followed by a Q&A with director Cate Shortland (Somersault, Lore), local bestselling author Melanie Joosten and producer Polly Staniford. Hosted by Rebecca Harkins Cross. Only Melbourne Q&A event! Tuesday 12 April, 6.30pm. Book tickets below!
Australian tourist Clare (Teresa Palmer) is backpacking around Berlin when she runs into a handsome schoolteacher called Andi (Max Riemelt), and they hit it off immediately. After a romantic night in Andi’s apartment, Clare wakes up alone the next morning… and discovers that she is locked in.
Clare soon realises that this is not a mistake, and that Andi intends to keep her captive. Cut off from the outside world, the weeks stretch into months and Clare must deal with the whims of the increasingly unhinged Andi while attempting to plot her escape.
From director Cate Shortland (Somersault, Lore), and adapted from the best-selling thriller by Melbourne author Melanie Joosten, BERLIN SYNDROME is a claustrophobic and psychologically astute observation of the shifting power dynamics in the relationship between kidnapper and captive, and in Palmer’s arresting performance keeps viewers’ hearts in their throats longing for Clare’s escape.
