Oscar-nominated director Taika Waititi and the star of his hit film, James Rolleston, joined fellow Kiwi Alan Brough at Cinema Nova to celebrate the arrival of Waititi’s outstanding new film BOY – the highest grossing New Zealand movie ever. The NZ trio discussed the art of good comedy, personal heroes, New Zealand and Michael Jackson! The film is Waititi’s semi-autographical tale about growing up on the east coast of New Zealand in the eighties.

On hand to discuss the book-to-film adaptation was musician and broadcaster Dave Graney; author and Meanjin editor Sophie Cunningham; film critic for The Age Philippa Hawker; and SBS radio’s Danièle Kemp. Plus local group Houlette performed a live acoustic set of their French inspired folk/pop. The event was moderated by Thomas Caldwell of Cinema Autopsy. |

Cinema Nova celebrated Tommy Wiseau’s cultural ‘disasterpiece’, THE ROOM, by sending it off in style after 12 weeks of sell-out audiences hurling spoons and abuse at what Entertainment Weekly dubbed “The Citizen Kane of bad movies”. SBS Movie Show presenter and author Michael Adams hosted a farewell screening of THE ROOM where the phenomena of bad cinema was discussed in a Q&A moderated by Carol van Opstal from Screenthemes.

| Cinema Nova’s third Page To Picture event involved a screening of the highly-anticipated post-apocalyptic drama THE ROAD, followed by a panel discussion. On-hand to talk about John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s prize-winning story were media personality and writer Marieke Hardy, director of ‘Blessed’ Ana Kokkinos, The Age’s Book Editor Jason Steger, author & online artist Dr Justin Clemens as well as film critic and author Thomas Caldwell. A very personal book for some on the panel, all agreed that Hillcoat’s feature was a brave and captivating take on McCarthy’s bestseller. |
