Australian Dream, The

Adam Goodes is centre stage in THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM, a feature documentary that encompasses the AFL great and his career – and the endemic racism he faced in the public eye as an Indigenous footballer.

MIFF’s opening night choice this year and from the producers of THAT SUGAR FILM, journalist Stan Grant has penned the doco about Goodes: Brownlow Medallist, 2014 Australian Of The Year, and a football star whose career was shortened due to a pervasive onslaught of discrimination from football goers.

Focusing on the man but drawing on larger issues of the problems rife in Australian society, THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM shows a country divided in its identity and is a necessary reminder of how ugly debate over race can become. Ultimately, Goodes and the filmmakers make an important statement of what it means to belong.
