Funny Cow

Comedy is a serious business. It’s especially serious when you’re a woman attempting to make it as a stand-up comic in the blokey, misogynistic world of working men’s clubs in 1970s Northern England. The eponymous Funny Cow (Maxine Peake) is used to being the butt of abusive men’s jokes – from childhood beatings to the violence both physical and emotional meted out by her chauvinist husband, she’s had it all heaped on her. Taking her pain and transforming it into comedy, Funny Cow’s journey is one that is equally hilarious, heart-breaking, and formidable.

Backed by a moody, melancholic soundtrack by Richard Hawley, FUNNY COW draws on a long history of northern English, working class cinema to craft a tale of the kind of woman so often ignored in those kind of films, and is unflinching in its examination of the barriers faced by a woman trying hard to succeed in a man’s world.
