Last Action Hero
30th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING! It was the summer of 1993 and Arnold Schwarzenegger's meta action comedy was poised to be the biggest blockbuster of the summer! In May there was a giant inflatable Arnie looming over the Croisette at Cannes, the star's wind-swept hair had been perfectly captured in the one-sheet (did you notice?) and the movie featured more cameos than anyone could ever have imagined. All was going perfectly, except for one thing: it opened the weekend after a little movie named Jurassic Park. ("Big mistake")
Directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator) and co-written by Shane Black, Schwarzenegger's passion project never lived up to audience, critical and studio expectation despite its rather ingenious mash-up of Purple Rose Of Cairo and Cinema Paradiso, by way of the megastars most iconic action spectaculars. It’s since found fans inevitably not left disappointed by a typically-90s, overblown promotional campaign through the magic of VHS. Tear your magic ticket, take your favourite seat and just try not to be swept up in one of the decade’s most imaginative original (!!) fantasy adventures.
