MF: Lee Gambin's Tonight on a Very Special Episode

Writer/historian Lee Gambin will discuss the television phenomenon known as the Very Special Episode - a trope in the history of American sitcoms where comedic episodic programs suddenly "got serious" and discussed varied topics ranging from rape, drug use, eating disorders, abortion, shoplifting, race issues, coming out and beyond! From early incarnations found in formative situation comedies such as LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, right through to creepy bicycle men on DIFF'RENT STROKES and to that time Alex P. Keaton got hooked on speed on FAMILY TIES, Gambin will cover a massive range of examples of this fad, thoroughly discussing their creation and impact whilst accompanied by a large number of clips and stills.

From the works of legendary show runners such as Norman Lear (who gave us groundbreaking shows such as ALL IN THE FAMILY and MAUDE) and Susan Harris (the "mother" of THE GOLDEN GIRLS) to looking at social and political changes that were heavily influenced by the power of these TV shows, Gambin's talk promises to be an enlightening, entertaining and emotionally rousing event that will definitely make you want to revisit classic TV sitcoms such as THE FACTS OF LIFE, MR. BELVEDERE, MORK & MINDY, GOOD TIMES and so many more.
