An amateur birdwatcher, Fernando (Paul Hamy), is on an expedition in northern Portugal when he loses control of his kayak in the rapids, and wakes up in the middle of a forest in the care of two Chinese women who are on a pilgrimage. The further Fernando goes into the forest the stranger and more fantastic the situations he encounters become, until it becomes apparent that Fernando is in the middle of a journey of the soul – one where the terrain traversed may be more important than any revelation.
Playful and provocative, THE ORNITHOLOGIST transforms into a surreal retelling of Catholic parable of Saint Anthony of Padua (the patron saint of lost things) that is equal parts spiritually transfixing and homoerotically charged. You won’t have seen anything quite like it before.
