The 17th-century tulip mania is raging, and in Amsterdam painter Jan van Loos (Dane DeHaan) has been commissioned to paint the portrait of beautiful young noblewoman Sophia (Alicia Vikander) by her merchant husband Cornelis Sandvoort (Christoph Waltz). The intimacy engendered by these painting sessions lead to a covert romance between the painter and his subject, and as their love for each other grows a plan is concocted for their escape that involves a scheming maid, switched identities, and a high-stakes investment in the increasingly unstable tulip market.
