Set against the same backdrop as the Mona Lisa, the breathtaking Floating Piers project from international art icon Christo was the most visited and most talked about art event of 2016. The spectacular project saw kilometres of floating, saffron-coloured walkways unfurled across Italy’s stunning Lake Iseo, in what was his most ambitious work yet. It received a staggering 1.2 million visitors in just 16 days as the public flocked to experience the ‘modern miracle’ of walking on water.

After the death of his collaborator and wife Jeanne Claude, Christo set about bringing the project life, almost fifty years after the pair had conceived the idea, and following knock backs from multiple countries due to its sheer scale. This time, the small province of Brescia in Northern Italy welcomed it with open arms.

This intimate portrait encompasses the epic madness of it all— the complex dealings between art and state politics, engineering challenges, logistical nightmares, the sheer force of nature and a true maverick chasing a dream. Not to mention a small stop off in Rome for some artistic inspiration and to gift the Pope some art…
