Xolani, a lonely factory worker, joins the men of his community in the mountains of the Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood via their traditional ceremonial rite of Ukwaluka. Xolani is charged with caring for Kwanda, who unlike the rest of initiates is a city boy from Johannesburg, educated, and deeply suspicious as to the point of this ancient ritual in the modern world. When Kwanda’s defiance results in him uncovering Xolani’s best kept secret, which implicates another of the men facilitating the ceremonies and could see them both expelled from the community, Xolani's entire existence begins to unravel.
