Io Capitano

In this acclaimed film which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Matteo Garrone presents a "reverse shot" of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy.

Told through the mind’s eye and experiences of Seydou, a teenage boy who, together with his cousin Moussa, decides to leave Dakar in Senegal and make his way to Europe, IO CAPITANO is a contemporary journey through the dangers of the desert, the horrors of the detention centers in Libya and the perils of the sea.
