Piano Teacher, The

Isabelle Huppert stars as Erika Kohut, a highly respected piano teacher at the Conservatory in Vienna. In her early forties, Erica still lives at home with her mother, an influential force that invades almost every aspect of her life. Severely repressed because of this claustrophobic co-dependency, her own life is devoid of the masochism she goes out of her way to observe. That changes when she meets Walter (Benoît Magimel), a student whose desire for Erika leads to a destructive infatuation that upsets the careful equilibrium of her life.
Winner of the Cannes Grand Prix in addition to Best Actress and Best Actor for its two leads, Michale Haneke’s psychological drama has become a staple of his filmography, and a film that still dominates discussion today.
