LYNCHPINS: The essential films of David Lynch. See here for information on other features screening as part of this series.
David Lynch's surreal psychological thriller returns to the cinema screen fully restored. Defying simple explanation, it has been called both a masterpiece and an enigma. The last feature completed by the filmmaker, Lynch also acted as cinematographer, editor and sound designer. Starring Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton and Grace Zabriske, it also features cameo appearances by Jeremy Irons, Terry Crews, Julia Ormond and William H Macy.
Actress Nikki Grace (Laura Dern) experiences a series of strange encounters with friends and strangers while seeking to book her next role. Landing a role in a film based on a Polish folk-tale, Nikki learns that a prior adaptation was abandoned when both of that film's leads were murdered. Beginning an affair with co-star Devon (Justin Theroux), Nikki starts to have difficulty distinguishing between her real life and the events depicted in the movie. As reality slips away, Hollywood itself becomes a house of horrors where nothing is quite as it seems.
