Two of Us

Filippo Meneghetti’s directorial debut brings TWO OF US, a love story set in France between two elderly women that navigates the obstacles of secret love, coming out, and ageing. Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) are two life-long companions who’ve been secretly deeply in love for many years, carrying out a clandestine relationship behind the closed doors of their neighbouring flats, with even family unaware. When Madeleine has a stroke rendering her unable to speak, Nina suddenly finds herself shut out of her partner’s life and increasingly desperate, convinced that their bond will manage to bring the other woman back to her former self.

Meneghetti has assembled a finely-tuned chamber drama that aches, another film to go into the canon of queer, heart-rending films, with complex and beautiful performances by its leads.
