Grey Gardens and Sans Soleil

DOUBLE FEATURE! Twentieth century documentaries that broke the mould and pushed the genre into new spaces.

GREY GARDENS is a documentary as unique as the people in it. Shot entirely on the estate known as Grey Gardens, the documentary follows Big Edie and Lil Edie, the reclusive cousins to Jackie O who, after losing their fortune, have retreated to the decaying manor. Reflecting on their life within the countries elite with both hilarity and unnerving horror, the one-of-kind personalities of the two women show the enduring effect of pursuing the American dream.

A documentary like no other, SANS SOLEIL is one-part visual essay and one-part travelogue. A woman narrates the ruminations of a seasoned traveller, who’s letters contemplating time and memory are overlaid by a tapestry of videos and imagery from vastly different countries, such as Japan, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, France and the USA. In 2014, Sight and Sound magazine listed SANS SOLEIL as the third greatest documentary of all time.
