United States vs Billie Holiday, The

Singer Andra Day gives a Golden Globe winning performance as the iconic American jazz singer in THE UNITED STATES VS BILLIE HOLIDAY, director Lee Daniels’ (Precious) take on the part of Holiday’s career that was marked by an undercover sting operation by the FBI.

In the 1940s, Holiday is targeted by the government in an attempt to stop her singing her song “Strange Fruit”, in order to racialise the war on drugs. With the sting operation led by Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes, Moonlight) - with whom Holiday had a tumultuous affair - the film intimately tells a story of an incredibly talented yet complicated woman’s relationship with heartbreak, fame and addiction.
