Hurt stars as Harvard professor Edward Jessup, who experiments with the hallucinatory state caused by ingesting a potion crafted by a tribe residing in rural Mexico. Returning to the USA with ingredients gathered from the mysterious Hinchi people, Jessup continues his studies by taking increasingly concentrated doses of the potion before becoming convinced that his visions might be manifesting in the real world.

Written by Paddy Chayefsky (Network), ALTERED STATES was called a "dazzling piece of science fiction" by Time magazine and acclaimed for its blend of then cutting-edge special effects, exploration of man's search for his true self, and an articulate and stylish screenplay. Today it is considered among the best films in the body-horror genre.
