In 1937, Kornyev (Alexander Kuznetsov), a young and naïve prosecutor, receives a letter written in blood from a prisoner alleging that the state secret police have abused their power and tortured him. Determined to meet the sender and learn about what’s occurring behind the walls of the gulag, Kornyev journeys into the heart of Russian secrecy to bring the case to Moscow. But inside a system designed to intimidate and deter, this proves to be an almost impossible challenge with staggering repercussions.
