MF26 Tura!

It's difficult to imagine anyone being more formidable than Varla, the man-hating, ass-kicking, drag-racing force of nature at the centre of Russ Meyer's Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Then you discover the life of Tura Satana.

Cody Jarrett's TURA! digs into the remarkable life of the woman behind one of exploitation cinema's most iconic characters. From a turbulent childhood to burlesque stages, exploitation movies and eventual cult immortality, Satana carved out a career and identity entirely on her own terms, refusing to play by anybody else's rules.

And while Varla may have made her an icon, Satana was much more than Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. She battled John Carradine's solar-powered monstrosities in Ted V. Mikels' The Astro-Zombies, returned for Mikels' wonderfully bonkers proto-Charlie's Angels action flick The Doll Squad, and built a screen persona that was unmistakably, unapologetically Tura.

Drawing on rare archival footage alongside interviews with family, friends and admirers, TURA! explores the violence and exploitation Satana endured, the fierce independence she forged from it and the way she took an identity routinely fetishised by others and turned it into a source of power entirely her own.

Narrated by Margaret Cho and featuring John Waters, Dita Von Teese and more, TURA! celebrates a legacy that stretches far beyond Satana's relatively small filmography - through burlesque, cult cinema and generations of women who found something liberating in her refusal to take shit from anybody - and her willingness to give it back in spades!
