Super Mario Bros. (1993)

30th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING! "This ain't no game."
Directed by the filmmakers behind the 1980s Max Headroom TV phenomenon, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton, SUPER MARIO BROS sees Bob Hoskins star as the beloved Nintendo character Mario Mario, alongside John Leguizamo as his brother Luigi Mario. Transported to a parallel universe ruled by a scenery-chewing Dennis Hopper as King Koopa, the two plumbers find themselves locked in battle to stop Koopa from merging his dystopic world with our own.
Given free creative license by Nintendo, the filmmakers deviated considerably from the popular video game’s storyline and incurred the wrath of fans. Initially a box office disaster, it has since become a cult movie thanks its innovative production design, Hoskins’ entertaining performance and how genuinely bizarre it is.
