Mommie Dearest + Sunset Boulevard

DOUBLE BILL! Continuing our obsession with 'movies about movies', this double feature of Hollywood melodramas about, uh, Hollywood features two legendary (for different reasons) performances.

Meet the biggest MOTHER of them all! Inspired by a true story, Faye Dunaway gives a rivetingly over-the-top performance as screen legend Joan Crawford. Desperate to be a mother but unable to bear children, Crawford adopts Christina (Diana Scarwid). Determined not to spoil a child raised amid the trappings of Hollywood, Crawford's treatment of her adopted daughter grows increasingly antagonistic - exacerbated by her own career being in decline. Initially a box office disappointment, MOMMIE DEAREST has since become a camp classic thanks to outsized performances, lavish production and a screenplay that regularly veers into the bizarre. Winner of 5 Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress!

From the ridiculous to the sublime, Billy Wilder's SUNSET BOULEVARD finds has-been silent-era actress Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) inviting screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) to consult on a script she hopes will lead to her comeback. Moving the writer into her outdated Hollywood mansion, Gillis discovers that Swanson refuses to recognise her fame has all but evaporated and the studio chiefs have moved on to younger stars. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, it has come to be recognised as one of the finest films ever made.
