Saipan

Detailing the behind-the-scenes confrontations of one of football’s most seismic events, SAIPAN stars Steve Coogan opposite Éanna Hardwicke (Vivarium) in a tense, taut, and thrilling true story of ego, loyalty, and identity.

Leading up to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the Republic of Ireland’s football team travels to the Pacific Island of Saipan for pre-tournament training and preparations. Upon arrival, however, it becomes clear that the facilities and amenities present aren’t suitable for the players. Championing a voice for his team, captain Roy Keane (Hardwicke) sparks a heated feud with the Irish manager Mick McCarthy (Coogan), that leads to an intense, constantly escalating rivalry that quickly gains traction in the media.
