MDFF26 The Marbles

MEET THE FILMMAKER: Sunday July 12, 6:50pm. Join director David Wilkinson for a post-screening Q&A of the MDFF Closing Night feature.

Director: David Wilkinson

THE MARBLES is the story of the greatest art heist in history and the fight to change a great wrong. In 1801, Lord Elgin removed half of the Parthenon, causing a scandal among his contemporaries. What followed was a 200-year battle between Greece and the British Empire over stolen heritage. In 1983, Melina Mercouri ignited a global movement that redefined cultural ownership and national pride, and it started a long battle by citizens of the United Kingdom insisting that these priceless works of art be returned to the country of their creation.
