Truth, The

Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Nobody Knows) makes his non-Japanese language debut with a Paris set all-star drama. Fabienne (Catherine Deneuve) has enjoyed a long and successful career as an actress and has just released her much-anticipated memoir, entitled THE TRUTH. Travelling to Paris to attend the book launch, her Hollywood-based screenwriter daughter Lumir (Juliette Binoche) and Lumir’s husband (Ethan Hawke) arrive just as Fabienne takes a role in a science fiction feature about a mother who never ages while her daughter grows older. As the women debate the accuracy of Fabienne’s book, the actress suffers a crisis of confidence as she is faced by the talent of a rising star while also suffering the fallout of not recognising the contribution of others to her career. Fascinatingly depicting the theatrics that occur before and after the camera rolls, Kore-eda’s intimate and heartfelt drama explores the rivalries within both families and careers.
