1962 Baltimore, Maryland. When Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) auditions for a popular teen dance show, she lands a spot as a regular, beating out the spiteful reigning queen of the show, Amber Von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick). With her newfound status, Tracy uses her platform to speak out against the racial discrimination in her town, pushing for more integration on The Corny Collins Show. When Amber's manipulative, pro-segregation parents (played by Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry) get wind of what's happening, a rivalry forms between the Turnblads and the Von Tussles; especially when Tracy and Amber both vie for the title of Miss Auto Show 1963.
