Summer Of Soul

A joyful must-watch for music doco fans, but also a crucial slice of Black history in America - SUMMER OF SOUL is a concert film unlike any other. Taking the audience back to the summer of ‘69 - to when the Harlem Cultural Festival ran over six weeks - much of the footage in the Questlove directed film has been collecting dust in a basement for 50 years. An unbelievable line-up including BB King, Stevie Wonder, the 5th Dimension, Sly and the Family Stone, Nina Simone, Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln, and others, took to the stage for an electrifying season of music….which, in turn, makes for an electrifying doco. Working in archival footage of the performances with talking heads of the surviving musicians, as well as reminiscences from audience members who were there, Questlove has painted a remarkable portrait of the summer that was - and that was almost forgotten.
