Stranger, The (L’Étranger)

Shot in sensuous black-and-white, THE STRANGER is an adaptation of Albert Camus’ landmark novella from prolific French filmmaker François Ozon (In the House, 8 Femmes).

Summer, 1938. Meursault (Benjamin Voisin), a quiet and unassuming clerk in his early thirties, moving throughout life with a detachment to the world around him. When he’s notified of his mother’s passing, the event fails to stir any emotions within, and he attends the funeral out of obligation. When he chances upon Marie (Rebecca Marder), a former colleague, at the local baths the next day, the pair become romantically entangled, but he remains at a distance, feeling nothing about their attachment. However, he soon finds his disconnected existence disrupted by Raymond (Pierre Lottin), his volatile neighbour that draws Meursault into a series of events that bring his morality into question.
