Stranger, The (L’Étranger)
Shot in sensuous black-and-white, THE STRANGER is an adaptation of Albert Camus’ landmark novella from prolific French filmmaker François Ozon (In the House, 8 Femmes).
Summer, 1938. Meursault (Benjamin Voisin), a quiet and unassuming clerk in his early thirties, moving throughout life with a detachment to the world around him. When he’s notified of his mother’s passing, the event fails to stir any emotions within, and when he chances upon Marie (Rebecca Marder), a former colleague, at the local baths the next day, the pair become romantically entangled, but he feels nothing about their attachment. However, Meursault soon finds his disconnected existence disrupted by his volatile neighbour Raymond (Pierre Lottin), who draws him into a series of events that bring his morality into question.
French and Arabic language, English subtitles.
