When Fall Is Coming

Direct from the San Sebastián International Film Festival where it won the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay, François Ozon’s darkly funny thriller WHEN FALL IS COMING leads from wild mushrooms to a layered and moving meditation on responsibility, human nature, and the knowability of truth.

In the depths of autumn in Burgundy, Michelle (Hélène Vincent) spends her isolated life foraging for mushrooms with her closest friend Marie-Claude (Josiane Balasko). When Michelle's acerbic Parisian daughter Valérie (Ludivine Sagnier) drops her son off for the school holidays, Michelle hopes his stay will rekindle their strangled relationship. But when Michelle makes an error in the preparation of their lunch, her relationships are altered irreparably, and she falls into a melancholic slump. That is until Marie-Claude’s son (Pierre Lottin) is unexpectedly released from prison.
